Kayo Gallery this month offers a glossy exposé of several members of the Oyster Pirates—Michael Page, Christian Rothenhagen and Shawn Webber—and window installation by Corey Day and Colour Maisch.

What sets this Pirate redux apart from the group’s collaborative shows is that this exhibition showcases their work as individual artists, allowing viewers to see the facets and merits of each. Rothenhagen, who traveled to Salt Lake City from Berlin for the opening, works mostly on cardboard—constructing minimal, clean, glossed urbanscapes of the city (“2” is pictured). Webber’s paintings, on the other hand, contain human and animal forms against gritty, nature-abstract backdrops. More organic still are the small-scale works by Page that show billowy and bubbly illustrative forms and characters that are glazed to perfection.

Day and Maisch deal with both ephemera and permanence via residue. Much more raw than the paintings, the installation incorporates furniture, ceramic, steel wool, tree roots dipped in black paint, video, and delicate cast shadows. Catch it while it’s still up.
