The 2010 Legislature is in full swing, and that means it’s game time for all you would-be citizen lobbyists. If you missed City Weekly’s recent citizen lobbying/drinking session, shame on you!

But don’t fret—you can still learn the ropes with an American Civil Liberties Union lobbying crash course. Follow that up with a fundraiser to support the Avalanche Watch Center, and finish by recycle your old, toxic electronics.

With the Leg’ in session, it’s time to work on your issue’s bullet points and your best power handshake. Also, you’ll want to attend the ACLU of Utah’s Lobby Night, where speakers will guide novice citizen lobbyists through the lawmaking process and provide tips and tricks on how to get your message effectively across to Utah’s 104 lawmakers.

Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center Fundraiser
Saturday, Feb. 6
Like watchdogs of the snow, the Utah Avalanche Center provides invaluable service in monitoring avalanche conditions on Utah’s slopes. Unfortunately, the center receives limited government funding and requires support from the public to maintain operations. That’s why the $50 ticket for its annual Apres fundraiser is so worthwhile. Consider the silent auction, plentiful beer, wine and appetizers, and the scenery surrounding Snowbird’s Cliff Lodge as bonuses. All proceeds benefit the center.

Did you know your old electronics hold a toxic cocktail of substances like lead, cadmium and mercury that, when dumped into landfills, can seep into the groundwater? This week, say good riddance to toxic trash by dropping off your old cell phones, computers, monitors and other electronics at a special drop-off.
