Grand Theatre: Urinetown

Through May 28 @ SLCC Grand Theatre

In a town stuck in a 20-year drought, water is so scarce that private toilets are unthinkable, and folks have to pay a toll to pee. If these poor souls don’t pay the fee or decide to go in the street, they are arrested and sent away to the dreaded and fabled penal colony that people have only heard about: Urinetown. This Tony Award-winning musical has it all: comedy, greed, parodies, love, rebellion and politics all packed into one outrageous romp of song and dance, and has been credited as the “very notion of what a musical could be.”

With a name like Urinetown, one might expect beginning-to-end toilet humor that is widely inappropriate. And although the show features musical numbers titled “Snuff That Girl” and “It’s a Privilege to Pee,” this show really is great for all audiences. The fun-filled performance highlights talent from local actors, singers and dancers and will be at SLCC’s Grand Theatre through the end of the month.

Urinetown @ SLCC Grand Theatre, 1575 S. State, 801-957-3322, through May 28, Sunday-Friday 7:30 p.m., Saturday matinee at 2 p.m., $10-$24. The-Grand.org
