As a warm-up to Earth Day, treat yourself to some great events this week like the U’s Global Health Fair, or plant some trees along the Jordan River. How about celebrating Earth Day the Sutherland Institute-style, where guest speakers, such as the guy who invented the Weather Channel, will tell you why global warming is an inconvenient hoax?

University of Utah Global Health Fair
Friday, April 17

The University of Utah Global Health Alliance hosts an afternoon filled with presenters, literature and speakers examining the state of the world’s health. It’s a great opportunity for those who want to help others heal to find out about many overseas services, programs and exchanges situated in far-flung locales ranging from Tibet to Ghana. University of Utah, Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Heath and Science Education Building, 26 S. 2000 East, April 17, 1-4 p.m. Contact mary.gibson@nurs.utah.edu

Earth Day Tree Planting
Saturday, April 18

What better way to give the planet a little love than to take part in some community tree planting along the Jordan River? Planting will take place Saturday morning and food will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring gloves and shovels. Bend-in-the-River Treehouse, 1030 W. Fremont Street, April 18, 8 a.m.-12 p.m., 801-587-9027, RSVP tpoelzing@sa.utah.edu, sa.utah.edu/bennion/bend/

Earth Week 2009: Future of Utah
April 22-24

Those green enough to be concerned about global warming ought to also be open-minded enough to consider alternative perspectives. Why not check out the Sutherland’s Earth Week events? Panelists include renowned Alabama climatologist John Christy as well as Weather Channel creator John Coleman. (When you RSVP for the event, probably best not to say you read about it in City Weekly.) Earth Week 2009, The Sutherland Institute, 307 W. 200 South, No. 5005, April 22-24, 801-355-1272, RSVP si@sutherlandinstitute.org
