In all his whimsical posturing, Michael Glatze has managed to confound benighted homophobes throughout the Christian right. Glatze claims he was a gay-rights “leader” because he once edited some obscure magazine targeting queer youth.
But that was before a series of capricious impulses overcame him: In 2005, Glatze prayed for Jesus to make him a God-fearing rugmuncher—and, miracle of miracles, it worked! Glatze’s fervent munching earned him the accolades of spokesperverts throughout the so-called “ex-gay” movement.
But then, in another unpredictable twist, Glatze converted to Mormonism. How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
Now the wingnuts are forced to make uncharacteristically nuanced distinctions: A July 16 editorial in The Christian Post quoted theologians tying themselves into knots explaining that, even though Glatze’s faith made him hetero, the LDS Church is still “false” and “antithetical … to Christianity.”
Many thanks to Glatze for giving right-wing religious nuts a chance to expose their double-barreled bigotry against gays and Mormons. And, we wish him authentic happiness once the “ex-gay” thing wears off.
