QUINTRON & MISS PUSSYCAT
nnQuintron has two constant companions: his lovely wife/master puppeteer Miss Pussycat and the insanely cool Drum Buddy. The latter is a light-activated, five-oscillator drum machine that users can manipulate by moving around an attached can. Those familiar with the Buddha Machine will appreciate this gadget as an extension of ambient-noise technology. Everyone else will dig the New Orleans organist’s mad-scientist approach to musical performance, which often entails a Drum Buddy demo and colorful puppet shows (picture those Fandango paper-bag characters under some kind of voodoo spell). KILBY COURT 7-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
nnPhil Sherburne cares a great deal about aesthetics. Kilby Court’s owner/founder is proud of how far his little all-ages venue has come'both in function and form. From a dilapidated, back-alley shack to a sturdy, thriving structure complemented by Sherburne’s kids and dogs roaming around indie rockers’ ankles. Where else can you enjoy an intimate performance by a huge new act with maybe five other people in attendance? It’s time to revisit your old favorite haunt'or at least pay your respects along with Love Runner, Will Sartain, Vanessa Shuput, Gentry Densley and U.S. Senate hopeful Pete Ashdown. BOOT CAMP CLIK
nnPeople keep complaining that hip-hop supergroups went out with Wu Tang Clan. Well, guess what, suckas? Wu Tang is currently touring (sans O.D.B., R.I.P.) and a number of other strong crews are blowing up across the nation, including Minneapolis collective Rhymesayers Entertainment and Brooklyn’s Boot Camp Clik. The latter group (which includes Buckshot, Smif N’ Wessun, Sean Price and Heltah Skeltah) has actually been kicking it since ’92, although it seems ’06 could be their year to prove that all or nothing is still the name of the game. PANIC! AT THE DISCO
nnTo be relieved or horrified by Panic! At the Disco? On one hand, the Las Vegas quartet helped offset the once-unstoppable emo/screamo craze by busting a move and breathing some humor into woe-is-me songwriting. On the other, Brenden Urie’s vocals strike more than a passing resemblance to Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, which might explain why Wentz was so stoked to help sign P!ATD. It might also explain why songs like “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” and “But It’s Better If You Do” seem retread and, well, a bit dull. Then again, their Clockwork Orange impersonation is pretty keen. THE RED ELVISES
nnMan, this week is ripe with inventive instrumentation: Check out Red Elvises’ bass balalaika, a triangular 3- to 6-stringed instrument that the Russian-based band uses to subvert American rock & roll. The lively quintet marries equal parts surf-guitar, rockabilly and traditional folk (see: bass balalaika) to create a cross-generational/multicultural sound suited for both dive bars and traditional wedding receptions, Six-String Samurai and Melrose Place.
