There are people who love musical theater, and there is everyone else. And the people who love musical theater generally love it with an irrational fervor that has them bursting into tears every time Tony and Maria sing “Somewhere,” or Eponine croaks out “A Little Fall of Rain.” It’s a culture as much as it is a dramatic form—and as such, it’s ripe for satire.

The Grand Theatre presents the 2005 off-Broadway hit Musical of Musicals: The Musical, a loving send-up of the form by Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart. More than a story, it’s five stories—or, more specifically, the same basic story four different ways, as it might have been told by five of the legends of musical theater.
