Salt Lake City artist Paul Heath has been very busy in his crowded Avenues studio creating dozens of comic-book-colored 3-D plywood storefronts and classic sketches and pastels.

It’s all part of his new show Different Places, Different Media. One of the latest pieces from the 46-year-old artist, “Tommy at Sundance” (pictured), features two faux celebrities and a lone paparazzo at Sundance in Park City. “It’s loosely based on a friend of mine,” Heath said. “He’ll probably end up getting it.” Heath’s wife Donna Pence, who does glassmosaic work, also will be featured in the show. Pence’s work showcases landscapes. “We’re just two artists trying to make a living,” Heath said. He describes the show as an eclectic mix, almost a retrospective. The pieces will include pastels inspired from a trip he and Pence took to Italy, as well as a whimsical spin on the Four Corners area—in snow globes. A large piece he had sold a decade ago will be on display, as will Heath’s “Vegas Alphabet”—A through Z in old Las Vegas casino signs.

Although Heath is known for his bright, colorful, kitschy pieces, he hopes his pastels will catch on, too. The classic lines of the architecture and a muted orange-and-earth-toned palette is a stark contrast to his other work. But both approaches show Heath’s love for form and keenness for perspective.
