Sam Weller’s Moving History

It was a shock to Salt Lake City’s book-loving community when much-beloved Sam Weller’s Zion Bookstore announced the shuttering of its longtime Main Street location. There is a silver lining, of sorts. Utah’s largest independent bookstore promised that was only moving, not closing.

Still, for many, Sam Weller’s is a Main Street institution—it has operated out of the David Keith Building since 1961—and the fact that it is leaving is a bit heartbreaking. Enter The Moving History Project. Catherine and Tony Weller invite everyone down to the store to video record their fond memories, thoughts, feelings and future wishes for the bookstore and its proprietors. Participants will be rewarded with 30 percent off used books, and the resulting videos will be archived online and shared live during May’s Gallery Stroll.

Sam Weller’s Bookstore: The Moving History Project @ 254 S. Main, 801-328-2586, May 9, 11, 12, 16, 18, 19, 7 p.m. SamWellers.com
