Pamela and Vaughn Pedersen, of Central Book Exchange, ask of their funky but booming Sugar House neighborhood: progress at what price?

Vaughn: The nondeveloped corners, the crossroads of Sugar House, are owned by [a handful of] landowners. It has a huge chance of going away. It’s just so ripe for a big developer to come in and do something stupid. It would just suck if it were just all Gaps and Wal-Marts.

Pamela: It’s one of the only places in Salt Lake City where you can work, eat, live and shop. You could pay half a million and live [downtown], which would be great. But, for the normal mix of people, this is the only place you can do that.

Vaughn: It’s one of the only reasonably hip neighborhoods. … But it’s going to go away.
