Celebrate Vegan Month of Food

Vegan Month of Food—aka Vegan MoFo—is an annual event where several hundred bloggers from around the globe post about vegan food every day for the month, with the intention of showing off the wide and varied world of vegan eats. In honor of September’s Vegan MoFo, here are recommendations of three local dishes you won’t want to miss—items both omnivores and vegans hold most dear to their hearts that are satisfying enough they might even inspire those who never thought they’d eat vegan to consider a change.

Comfort Food
Vertical Diner’s
(2280 S. West Temple, 801-484-8378, VerticalDiner.com) “chicken” biscuit pie is a comfort-food dream come true. Creamy vegetable “chicken” stew is poured over a flaky, moist biscuit. Seitan, or wheat meat, replaces the chicken quite well; it’s pretty meaty. Each bite contains a little piece of chicken-potpie heaven, perfect for tucking into on a crisp fall day.

Pizza
The stromboli at Este Pizzeria (156 E. 200 South, 801-363-2366; 2021 Windsor Ave., 801-485-3699, EstePizzaCo.com) satisfies my meaty, cheesy pizza jones. Perfect crust surrounds three toppings of your choice (try the veggie meatball) mingled with vegan cheese and a flavorful pizza sauce. There’s also a vegan slice of the day on Wednesdays.

Cookies
Buds
(509 E. 300 South, 801-521-4522, BudsSLC.com) is known for hearty sandwiches, but if you need a little something sweet after your vegan cheesesteak, pick up a chocolate-chip zucchini cookie. They taste fresh out of the oven, with a slightly gooey center and big, melty chocolate chips. After you taste this cookie, you’ll want to stop by for one every time you drive past Buds—they’re that good.

There’s a fantastic selection of vegan options here in Salt Lake City—certainly enough to celebrate Vegan Month of Food all year long.
