Dancer Ted Shawn is credited with once saying, “Dance is the only art in which we ourselves are the stuff of which it is made.” Dance students at Salt Lake Community College know all too well that nearly anything can inspire dance, and they will take any opportunity they can to take that inspiration and turn it into a beautiful medley of movement and art constructed solely by their bodies.

SLCC Dance Company’s annual spring concert Visual Art of Dance does just that, with this year’s dances based on works of art. Paired with visual art, this multimedia performance features film and live performance, with choreography by local professionals Solange Gomez, Roxanne Duennebeil and Natosha Washington. From modern-dance pieces based on works by Jackson Pollock, Picasso and Dalí to ballet pieces inspired by the Impressionists, this concert is sure to awe and inspire even those of us who can barely draw a stick figure and two-step our way around a club.

Visual Art of Dance @ SLCC Grand Theater, 1575 S. State, 801-957-3322, April 8-9, 7:30 p.m., tickets $8 ($4 with two canned food items). SLCC.edu/WhatsHappening/docs/DanceCompany.asp
