While contemporary musical theater struggles for survival in a world that often sees it as a corny relic, talented youngsters in Ogden are betting their future on being able to keep it alive. And it’s a bet I’d be willing to take.
Encore—a group of 24 students from Weber State University’s Musical Theatre program—this week presents a unique experience that combines a revue-style concert with a full-fledged theatrical performance. This greatest-hits extravaganza allows the audience to experience songs from musicals as wide-ranging as Hair, Shrek: The Musical, Sweeney Todd, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Spamalot, not just sung but staged, choreographed and performed in character. If the WSU alums who have dazzled in local theater productions are any indication, you could be in for an extraordinary treat— and one with no admission price, though donations are welcome. See the next generation of Utah’s triple-threat theatrical talent today.
