Whimsical Women of Comedy

Friday July 30 at Sponge Club

Comedy was, for decades, the province of the male gender. With only a few notable exceptions, such as Phyllis Diller and Carol Burnett, making people laugh was perhaps considered to be too crass an occupation for women. But no more! Along with the stand-up comedy explosion of the past few decades has come a wave of female comedians. The Whimsical Women show is more than just that, including slam poets, storytellers and food provided by a local caterer.

The show is being produced by Karen Michelle Bayard, who teaches comedy classes at Salt Lake Community College and promotes “Full-Body Laughter Coaching,” which treats laughter almost as a vitamin needed for good health. There should be no shortage of vitamin L—and in case you’re wondering, the Sponge Bar is SpongeBobthemed, with the appropriate paraphernalia.
