Race Out and Rent

The title of this feature often feels hard to justify. What do you say when the high-profile new releases are Hotel for Dogs, Bride Wars and The Uninvited?

I suppose what you say is: Look elsewhere. This week, specifically, you should look to the weirdly entertaining action-drama JCVD, in which the initials stand for one-time action-movie stalward Jean-Claude Van Damme. In this meta-story, Van Damme plays himself as a has-been working his way through hack paycheck movies while dealing with a child custody battle. And that means that when he finds himself in the middle of a bank-robbery hostage situation, it seems perfectly plausible that he's actually one of the bad guys. The Muscles from Brussels has some fun with his own image, but also does some convincing (dare I speak the word?) acting. And there are a couple of great individual moments, including an encounter with over-zealous fans. DVD gives you a chance to find interesting low-budget stuff you might have missed otherwise ... so race out and rent it.
