This Weekend Is Blowing Up Ya'll

When John Paul Jones says, “If you make a solo record and I don’t produce it, I’m not going to speak to you again,” you don’t just comply—you race to the studio before he changes his mind. The Led Zeppelin bassist helped convince Sara Watkins to get busy with her self-titled debut, an album she long considered making while playing in Nickel Creek. It's already one of my favorite LPs of '09. Tonight, Watkins hits The State Room to demonstrate her equally impressive onstage prowess with local openers Paul Jacobsen and the Madison Arm. Look for a show recap later this weekend.

For all-ages entertainment with a heaping helping of savory eats, head to the City & County Building for the annual Living Traditions Festival. In addition to traditional dance, crafts and culinary arts, organizers cooked up an impressive, eclectic musical lineup starting with tonight's headliner the Pine Leaf Boys. Other acts appearing this weekend: Lifesavas, Mike Seeger and the Rebirth Brass Band. More info here. On Saturday, SLC DJ Jesse Walker presents another installment of his monthly party Nite Lite with Julius The Mad Thinker unleashing his cosmic house at W Lounge.

And of course who could forget our favorite New Zealand comedy team Flight of the Conchords at Abravanel Hall on Sunday? Besides being hilarious geniuses, Bret and Jermaine boast mad musical chops. It ain't easy segueing from a sexy reggaton song or a sexy electro-hip-hop track to a send-up of earnest We Are The World style jams. This event is sold out, so kudos to those who scored tix. Otherwise, where there's a will there's a way. Just sayin'.
