According to TMZ and other sources, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson is
now dead after having been rushed to the hospital because of cardiac
arrest. His death appears to be a suicide caused by swallowing more
than two-dozen sleeping pills.
Complete details are not yet available, as this story is still developing.
I realized writing "Goodbye, Michael" combined with the picture to the
right could have been interpreted as a disrespectful attempt at humor.
But this was not the intention, and the goodbye is sincere. The news
was fresh, and as such the blog went up quickly without elaboration
into details or Jackson's profound legacy.
The cause of Michael's death has still not been determined, although many reports say it's likely that he ingested toxic amounts of the painkiller demerol, causing his cardiac arrest.
meantime, many people within a cross-generational span are stunned by
Jackson's sudden death. Reflections into how Jackson affected people's
lives abound everywhere from the blogosphere to the waiting line at
Wal-Mart. His influence was huge, and with his death more people are
remembering the invincible swagger he captivated the World with in his
glory days. Celebrities across the board are showing their respects on
Twitter. Even President Obama had a few words to say:
"What’s President Obama’s reaction to the death of pop superstar Michael Jackson? White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about it this afternoon.
“I talked to him about it this morning,” Gibbs said. “He said to me that obviously Michael Jackson was a spectacular performer and a music icon and I think everybody remembers hearing his songs and watching him moonwalk on television during Motown’s 25th anniversary.”
“But the president also said aspects of his life were sad and tragic,” Gibbs continued. “His condolences went out to the Jackson family and to fans that mourned his loss.”
Why no statement?
“Because I just said it,” Gibbs said."
Though Jackson's career and public image took a dive in the mid 1990's-present amid allegations of child molestation, plastic surgeries, the mysterious Neverland Ranch, and dangling his child from a balcony, the effects of his music have left a permanent mark not just in the U.S. but the whole world. Thriller remains the greatest selling album of all time. On the bad tour, he broke a Guinness World Record when 504,000 people attended seven sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium. I have a friend from Afghanistan who wasn't exposed to much of Western culture. He didn't even know who the Beatles were until he came to the U.S. But Michael Jackson was one of the few who broke through even to his sheltered-from-the-west society.
While alive in his latter career, Jackson faced much mockery by cultural commentary outlets. But the thick-description of Jackson's life reveals someone who was tormented by the scars of childhood abuse, and his erratic behavior was certainly explainable by this. What is truly unfortunate is that Jackson never found a way to recover from these scars.
I hope Jackson's legacy remembers mostly his magical qualities that captivated audiences and made
him a world-wide star. Hopefully, we can have compassion for the
life-struggles of the King of Pop. Rest in peace, Michael Jackson.
