The Vampire Diaries has young, sexy vampires (and various other supernatural creatures--all sexy, of course), but the writing and acting won't make anyone over the age/IQ of 14 want to drive a stake through their frontal lobe. The story's not as complex as True Blood (Vampire brothers--one repentant and earnest, the other bad and snarky--battle for the love of a mortal girl. There, we're done), but the dark tone and body count are more adult than Twilight/New Moon.
The ultimate test? I can make it through a whole episode The Vampire Diaries without laughing fits or blood seeping from my brain. Twilight, not so much.
