New York Subs on Main bites the dust

With all the new eateries opening up on Main, it was inevitable that something had to give. But it was still sad to see New York Subs, next door to the Beehive Tearoom, be the one to go.---

I never did find out the owner's name but he had a gruff, affable style, every sentence ending with the word "Bud," which as a foreigner to these soils I always found rather endearing.

If I had a preference, it was the roast beef and blue cheese sandwich, never less than robust and fullsome. The garden sandwich with a sprightly injection of sprouts was my alternative on those days when I was feeling slightly more health-conscious.

New York Subs fought the good fight in the face of the pitiless recession, even opening for breakfast, albeit with a slender menu. The sign posted in the door promises some form of a return, so I'll be intrigued to see what "Bud" does next.
