Lounge Act: Wednesday night grrrls, artists and rockers

Hump seems like a perfect time to enjoy some gritty rock, drag queens and killer contemporary art.---

Up at the Art Barn and Finch Lane Gallery, one of my favorite Utah artists, Sam Wilson, is part of a group show that includes Kathleen Crricaburu and Regina Donavan Stenberg. Expect some mind-altering visuals from these artists, and expect to want to buy some of their work before you leave the building. I always do.

At Rowland Hall High School, author Rosalind Wiseman (Queen Bees and Wannabes) presents her "Girl World Tour" to help tween girls and their mothers learn to communicate more effectively, and to give growing girls self-confidence. Wiseman's book served as the inspiration for Tina Fey's film adaptation, Mean Girls, and $40 gets a mother/duo pair into the 7 p.m. presentation, as well as copies of her books and other goodies.

Finally, while KISS is headlining at Rio Tinto Stadium down in Sandy, another New Yorker will be playing some classic—if also classically under-appreciated—rock and roll at In The Venue. Jesse Malin is a cohort of Ryan Adams, and a veteran of several New York punk and glam bands before he went solo and started delivering the kind of heartfelt, straightforward rock that made fans of folks like Bruce Springsteen.

Malin plays at 7:30 p.m., with Moneybrother opening the show. It's $10 at the door.
