Lounge Act Thursday: Devil Whales, Cowboy Poets & more

If you think a cowboy poetry gathering is all about ranchers with big mustaches and even bigger hats, dropping verses about their horses, you got another thing comin.'---

The Heber City Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Buckaroo Fair is one of the biggest such gatherings in the West, and it's a fine showcase of all things cowboy. You'll find tasty grub right off the campfire, Wild West shows with stunning horsemanship and shooting displays, and a ton of music—in addition to those cowboys and cowgals doing the poetry thing. You should really consider a trip to Heber to check it out, starting tonight with the concert by the Sons of the San Joaquin. The rest of the weekend includes tunes by Utah's own cowboy crooner Brenn Hill and Western swing/gypsy-jazz crew Hot Club of Cowtown.

Free Moral Agents (pictured) and 2Mex headline a gig at Bar Deluxe Thursday night, bringing a funky blend of improv rock and soul along with a little hip-hop, while The Urban Lounge hosts a bevy of killer local bands: The Devil Whale, The Head and the Heart and Spell Talk. And supergroup of sorts Terrible Things headlines a gig at Avalon Theater.

Fans of So You Think You Can Dance? can go check out the live, touring version at the Maverik Center in West Valley City tonight.
