Now-a-Dollar Nov. 5-11

Four recent releases make the jump to the discount houses--and based on box office figures, you probably didn't see most of them. ---

The one exception might be Takers, the heist thriller that found moderate success when it was released in August. Paul Walker, Hayden Christensen and Idris Elba are among the thieves looking for (say it with me now) one last big score.

Expectations were higher for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Oliver Stone's return to the story of Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) after his release from prison. Shia LaBeouf also stars as a hotshot young trader looking for advice from Gekko, who happens to be the estranged dad of his fiance (Carey Mulligan). What insight does Stone bring to our current financial crisis? Enough to make for interesting socially-relevant drama.

Less socially relevant and dramatic is the thriller Case 39, a thriller starring Renee Zellweger that finally emerged from two years on the studio shelf. It might have deserved its poor box-office showing more than The Switch, in which Jason Bateman plays a guy who -- through admittedly improbable circumstances -- replaces his best-gal-pal's (Jennifer Aniston) planned surrogate semen with his own. The concept alone kept plenty of folks away, but it's a surprisingly funny and sweet comedy, anchored by Bateman's typically terrific performance.
