TV Tonight: Sing-Off, ACAs, The Closer, Bourdain

Damn: FX has canceled Terriers—but at least the series wrapped up its first and only season nicely. Meanwhile, last night’s The Walking Dead finale broke AMC viewership records. See what an explicit show title can do? ---

What’s new tonight:
The Sing-Off (NBC) Season Premiere: Dancing, ice-skating, now a cappella groups? When did network reality TV become a 1950s variety show? Nick Lachey hosts the second (!) season of The Sing-Off, with judges Ben Folds (of the Five), Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls, known for their … singing?) and Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men, ditto). It’ll be on several times a week until Dec. 20, displacing real NBC shows (such as Chuck, Parenthood, etc.) and generally annoying the shit out of me. Which means ‘Merica will love it.

The American Country Awards (Fox) Speaking of what ‘Merica loves, here’s another country music awards show! Fox says this one is different because, well, it’s on Fox (never home to a country music show) and The Fans vote—so it’s like People’s Choice meets the CMAs, the worst of everything. It’s also pretty much the only musical special to not feature Katy Perry this year, so there’s that. But who invited Bret Michaels?

The Closer (TNT) Season Premiere: Kyra Sedgwick continues Season 6, though all of the episodes kind of blur together anymore thanks to perpetual repeats on TNT and now in syndication. What makes The Closer work (Sedgwick, strong supporting cast, cases that wrap at episode’s end) also makes it a bit dull after all of these years; a shake-up is long overdue here. Maybe a coke habit for Sedgwick’s Brenda after she mistakes it for powdered donut sugar, just spit-balling …

Men of a Certain Age (TNT) Season Premiere: Read all about it in True TV (Item 5).

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (Travel) Holiday Special: Bourdain and Michael Ruhlman screw up a holiday dinner—fortunately, Mario Batali, David Chang and Duff Goldman (Ace of Cakes) drop in and save the day. But who didn’t re-invite Queens of the Stone Age?

Also new tonight:
Skating With the Stars, Castle (ABC); How I Met Your Mother, Rules of Engagement, Two & a Half Men, Mike & Molly, Hawaii 5-0 (CBS); Chase (NBC); 90210, Gossip Girl (The CW); In Treatment (HBO); Hoarders (A&E); Conan (TBS)

Preview: Tonight’s The Closer looks a lot like last summer’s The Closer. Or last year’s …
