Lounge Act Thursday: Poets who know it

Thursday's highlights include poets of both the traditional and musical varieties.---

The highlight of Thursday's music events for me is the arrival of Red River (pictured), a somewhat orchestral-pop crew out of Long Beach (of all places) whose leader, Bill Roberts, writes some ridiculously pretty songs full of excellent poetry of the poppy kind. We have a clip of Red River's Roberts performing a tune solo right here, but the full band experience will be decidedly more lush when they hit the stage at Kilby Court Thursday. Also on tap, electro-rockers Ultraviolent Sound perform Thursday at The Metro, along with like-minded dancefloor dominators Electric Valentine.

For poetry of a more traditional style, Utah's poet laureate Katherine Coles recently returned from a trip to Antarctica, and she says the trip gave her a creative boost like she's never had before. At noon at the Marriott Library on the U campus, Coles will read some of her new, Antarctic-inspired works and host a Q&A.

For the kids, and grownups, a trip to the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley could be worthy for the show Water: Where Nature Meets Art, an event combining artwork, poetry and a piano concert. It starts at 6:30 p.m.
