New amendments to Sen. John Valentine’s liquor bill would prohibit bars and clubs from offering daily beer specials “that encourages over consumption or intoxication.”---

Valentine confirmed his legislation addresses overconsumption by limiting bars and clubs from offering daily beer specials. He says that rule should technically already be in place, even if in practice, many bars and clubs are not following it.

 "That actually already is the law, but it was unclear to some people," Valentine says in a recent interview. "And some people were trying to get into [offering] daily drink specials and that is a direct violation of over-consumption elements of past bills. When we talked to the [Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control] they thought it was already in the law, but I said 'I've seen them all over.' And they recognized that maybe it wasn't crystal clear, so I said alright, I'll make it crystal clear."

The bill would still allow bars and clubs to set drink prices, but would simply not allow them to change prices from one day to the next on beers. The bill amendments would also clarify to allow for events to serve unlimited alcohol for a set time frame, such as the City Weekly's Beer Festival. Such events, however, would be required to serve drinks to seated patrons, offer food and would not be allowed to advertise themselves as "all you-can drink" type events.
