Your D.A. - A pothead?

Several weeks ago, City Weekly put the call out to local artists to create "potheads" or planted pots that resemble local faces.

The leader of the pack, in my view, is a pot resembling Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill by artist MaryAnne Alston.

The resemblance was uncanny. From well detailed facial expressions and Gill's bow tie, to textured eyebrows, Alston nailed it.

Additionally, the pot was constructed using the infamous double pot connection technique.

By employing this strategy, Alston was able to present a fully formed Gill with shirt and campaign button to boot. Clearly, Gill towers above all the other competition. That campaign button will hardly be needed to overshadow those diminutive pots made by elementary school students.

Yet, attention to detail carries the day in my opinion. Alston's pothead representation of Gill remains a lesson for us, showing that when dedication and vision combine, the results are boundless.

City Weekly's potheads will be auctioned off through a silent auction at the City Weekly booth at the Live Green Festival at the Salt Lake City Main Library on Saturday, May 7. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit Wasatch Community Gardens.
