Music Video Monday: Friends Forever?

In honor of recent and upcoming high school and college graduations, this week’s video is one that is sure to bring a tear to your eye: “Graduation Song (Friends Forever)” by Vitamin C. ---

Items of Note:

  • Even though there’s supposed to be some kind of unrequited love story going on here, it seems like our protagonist, a young Kristen Bell look-alike, has recently been the victim of some major trauma at the hands of the Not Very Hunky Dude. The look she keeps giving him is the same look you give a person who recently ran over your dog.
  • Take a shot every time you see a ’90s high school music video stereotype.
  • Possibly the lamest school choir of all time, and that’s saying something.
  • I’m not sure why Vitamin C fades in and out of the school like a ghost. Is she the ghost of Missed Hookup Opportunities Past?
  • The plotting of this video makes no sense. It’s the last day of school, everyone leaves, Girl wanders school looking for Guy, school is empty, Girl gives up, Girl decides to give it another go and … everyone is back at their lockers? They gave the same care to the shooting of this video as they gave to the lyrics “And as our lives change/ From whatever …” Yeah, whatever, OK?
  • Vitamin C’s Wikipedia page says, “The song is considered, to date, the biggest hit of Vitamin C.” If there’s one thing you can count on Wikipedia contributors for, it’s baseless optimism.
  • I remember this song feeling all meaningful when I was in school, but can anyone really say they’ve remained “friends forever” with their entire high school? I haven’t, and all I can say is, THANK GOD.

Last week’s Music Video Monday was about motorcycle deaths, but thanks to a bloated intro and some other news taking over the Interwebs at the same time, you may have passed it over. Check it out here.
