We need your help.

Newspapers and media companies nationwide are closing or suffering mass layoffs since the coronavirus impacted all of us starting in March. City Weekly's entire existence is directly tied to people getting together in groups--in clubs, restaurants, and at concerts and events--which are the industries most affected by new coronavirus regulations.

Our industry is not healthy. Yet, City Weekly has continued publishing thanks to the generosity of readers like you. Utah needs independent journalism more than ever, and we're asking for your continued support of our editorial voice. We are fighting for you and all the people and businesses hardest hit by this pandemic.

You can help by making a one-time or recurring donation on PressBackers.com, which directs you to our Galena Fund 501(c)(3) non-profit, a resource dedicated to help fund local journalism. It is never too late. It is never too little. Thank you. DONATE

Lounge Act Tuesday: Portlandia and a Battle of the Bands

An almost-full moon of musical stylings shines over the valley tonight.---

Nick Jaina is a master lyricist with a good voice, to boot. The art-folk Portlander, however, received some expert aid on his recent release, The Beanstalks That Have Brought Us Here Are Gone, from some of the city’s finest female vocalists—Luz Mendoza and Laura Gibson, to name a few—and out-of-towners like Jolie Holland. So, if it were anyone else, we’d worry about how those borrowed falsettos could be pulled off live. David Williams and Jay William Henderson join Jaina on the bill at Urban Lounge.

If you're in the mood for honest, straight-up punk, check out Face to Face at the Complex, or catch the blue notes of Staks O’Lee at The Garage. Or sit in on the Crescent City Brass Band as they invoke the sounds of the Big Easy over at Kilby Court -- not your dad's high school jazz band.

Down in Provo, Velour’s Summer Battle of the Bands heats up for a second day. Tonight’s line-up includes Proving Ground, They Shall Be Lions, Bottleship and Old Grey Geese.

For an evening out without breaking the bank, check out this week’s Events for Cents, which includes a cheap flick at Wasatch Touring and a casserole contest up at Alta.
