New Tunes Tuesday: Folk Fantasy

Today sees a smattering of folk releases including one promising, self-proclaimed “transcendental folk” group.---

After seeing them perform for a dozen folks at Woody's Tavern in Moab three years ago, I have been touting the transcendental folk of the Nederland, Colo.,-based five-piece Elephant Revival. And I will continue to do so, especially with their latest release Break in the Clouds’ ethnic inspirations and abundant harmonies. The talented instrumentalists are fronted by Bonnie Paine, who’s sultry voice is certainly one of a kind. Check out an interview with the band about their sound in a preview from 2010’s Moab Folk Festival.

Sub Pop folk rockers Vetiver continue to craft their down-home sound on The Errant Charm. The release befits fans of Blitzen Trapper and Fruit Bats.

From Boston’s incredible chest of golden singer-songwriters comes the self-titled album by Marissa Nadler, the outcome of a Kickstarter campaign.

For something a little different, Radical Dads drop their contribution to the indie rock world with Mega Rama, nine short songs filled with chugging guitars.
