We need your help.

Newspapers and media companies nationwide are closing or suffering mass layoffs since the coronavirus impacted all of us starting in March. City Weekly's entire existence is directly tied to people getting together in groups--in clubs, restaurants, and at concerts and events--which are the industries most affected by new coronavirus regulations.

Our industry is not healthy. Yet, City Weekly has continued publishing thanks to the generosity of readers like you. Utah needs independent journalism more than ever, and we're asking for your continued support of our editorial voice. We are fighting for you and all the people and businesses hardest hit by this pandemic.

You can help by making a one-time or recurring donation on PressBackers.com, which directs you to our Galena Fund 501(c)(3) non-profit, a resource dedicated to help fund local journalism. It is never too late. It is never too little. Thank you. DONATE

The many shades of jazz will fill the air tonight.---

It’s hard to say that Bruce Hornsby is a jazz musician. The legendary pianist, known for his improvisational live shows, draws on bluegrass, soul and jam on his versatile and well-received catalog of tunes. But those stylings are, to various degrees, rooted in the American musical tradition. And seeing Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers at Red Butte Garden tonight will make for either a nice introduction to the form or a treat for the aficionado. The same can be said for the opener, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, who are mighty fine in their own right. About as experimental as music makers get, the Nashville-based foursome are eclectic enough to see without Hornsby. However, both together will make for an exceptionally awesome evening.

Local jazz scenesters Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra might be taking notes at Red Butte before they cue up their set at Bar Deluxe tonight. As the Ocean is also on the bill.

And Daniel Day Trio will play jazz renditions of Top 40 hits over at Gracie’s for another after-Hornsby option.
