Now in its third year, the Tuesday night Downtown Farmers Market offers locavores a chance to shop with area growers and artisans without the hustle and bustle of the Saturday market. This Tuesday, Aug. 9, is the opening night.---

Open from August until the end of October, the Tuesday market is food-focused, which affords for easy in-and-out shopping without compromising freshness or flavor. As a comparison, there are a bit over 25 vendors there versus the about 250 on Saturday. So don’t expect ready-to-eat food vendors, crafts, music and the like (although buskers have been known to play some tunes with an open hat).

The market is good for reasons beyond fast shopping for slow foods, though. “The Tuesday Market is a way for the Downtown Alliance to build on the success of the Saturday morning Farmers Market and to create another venue for fresh and local produce in the heart of the city,” says market manager Kim Angeli. “Our long-term goal is to have a year-round public market where food producers and food lovers meet. The addition of the Tuesday Market takes us one step closer to bringing that goal to fruition.”

According to the Farmers Market Website, this week shoppers can expect: fresh raspberries, sweet corn, onions, potatoes, garlic, zucchini, summer squash, early tomatoes, kohlrabi, turnips, carrots, chard, herbs, beets and more.
