Argentine restaurant debuts in Taylorsville

On a corner off 4500 South going west, just after you get off I-15, Argentine cuisine once more makes a stand. ---

Run by Bolivian-born Silvia and Argentine-born Alfredo, Tango Mixed Grill's greatest asset is that it's a family affair. The couple demonstrate a genuine passion for their business and its future that is infectious. They only opened the restaurant a few weeks ago and it's very much a work in progress. But Alfredo's ambitions are clear. In Spanish, he says, "I want to show Americans the different cuts of meat, the different tastes we have."

As a starter, the delicious meat filling of the empanadas struggles a little with the heavy pastry casing. My two children, along with several friends, nevertheless devoured a dozen of them in a few minutes.

The mixed grill or parrillada features chorizos, pork and short ribs, and  grilled chicken but sadly lacked blood pudding -- morcilla -- a key element for my children; at least in a selection of grilled goodies. The restaurant had already sold out of them and is awaiting more from California.

The facturas, notably their alfajores -- a crumbly biscuit sandwich filled with dulce de leche and lightly dipped in coconut -- were superb. If you're passing and fancy a coffee and something sweet, you would be hard pressed to find a better option mid-valley.

Alfredo says he's going to implement a new menu Nov. 4, as he works out what sells and doesn't. Thursday nights, he says, the restaurant has been full of Argentines and Uruguayans, and on Friday nights Chileans, so it appears the Latin American community has already embraced its first fledgling steps.
