Sundance 2012: Locals Best Bets 1/21

There are plenty of great options for local Sundancers today. Too bad most of them are at the same time. ---

In the early slot, early word on the street is strong for the World Documentary 1/2 Revolution, a firsthand account of the 2011 Egyptian revolution. The U.S. Competition drama Middle of Nowhere, about a woman struggling with emotionally supporting her imprisoned husband, has its fierce adherents, though I'm not one of them.

The second block features the embarrassment of riches. The Law in These Parts is a terrific multilayered documentary exploring the legal system implemented by Israel in occupied Palestine. The NEXT drama I Am Not a Hipster offers some wonderful character study of family dynamics. And The Queen of Versailles -- a fascinating documentary about billionaires becoming millionaires after the financial crisis hits -- ranks as the one film every attendee thus far seems to agree is one of the best.

In the early evening, CW's Dan Nailen recommends the epic documentary about the controversial "West Memphis 3" case, West of Memphis. Thus far, many of the other offerings are still mysteries to us.
