LDS Church-owned KSL.com is again taking heat for its Top Gun status in unregulated gun sales. --- An investigative report prepared by the New York City Mayor's Office in December 2011 showed that KSL.com was third in the nation in active gun listings, only behind portals that specialize in gun sales such as Gunlistings.org and Armslist.com.

The report, titled "Point, Click & Fire: An undercover investigation of illegal online gun sales," made little of KSL.com's LDS Church connection when initially published. However, a recent Buzzfeed article reported an unidentified source from NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office was calling out the church for putting "profits over principle." The story has since drawn more widespread media interest.

Locally, KSL.com's laissez-faire gun-sales policies came into prominence in spring of 2011, when both the Trib and Deseret News ran stories about KSL's gun-sales niche, hinting that KSL.com was considering making changes. But once the uproar died down, KSL.com essentially maintained the course.

A video on Mayor Bloomberg's site highlights conversations with undercover agents posing as gun buyers. Gun buyers ask if they need to be able to pass a background check, because they probably couldn't pass one. An Orem gun seller glosses over the question and proceeds to make arrangements for the sale.
