Glad You Asked: Poetry Slams, Photos and Skeet Skeet

Dear GYA: I’ve been riding in a cab from West Philadelphia for the past 3 days. It seemed legit since the license plate said “FRESH” and there were dice on the mirror. Anyways, I’m spending the day in SLC and taking off to Bel-Air in the morning. Got any good ideas for stuff to do today? Yo,holmes, smell you later. – Will S., troubled teenager, Downtown Marriot---

Will, why would you take a cab from Philly? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Welp, since you’re  here you should start your day by checking out the 24x24 exhibit over at Alpine Art. It’s a series of photographs shot by 24 locals who documented the first 24 hours of January 1st 2012. All the photos were taken here in Utah, so it this should be a pretty cool way to learn about the area. Admission is free and it’s going on all day.

Next, I would go see the film Louder than a Bomb over at the Utah Film Center. It’s the story of inner-city Chicago students who participated in the world’s-largest poetry slam. I hear it's a tear-jerker but I know how much you like to get your rhyme on. The show starts at 7 p.m.

Lastly, check out DJ Skeet Skeet at Metro Bar. He’s known to play everything from hip-hop, house, moombahton and even afro-beat. Plus, last spring he was Katie Perry’s tour DJ. Electro-folk duo DWNTWN will be opening up and celebrity photographer Rony’s Photobooth will also be in attendance. Tickets are still available at Smithtix.com for only $10.

Other things happening today that are suitable for a prince:

-Plan B Theatre Company's debut of The Third Crossing tonight at The Rose Wagner Center

-The silent film Sand, will be playing tonight at the Organ Loft

- Metal bands The Stellar Corpses and Zombiance will be performing at Burt's Tiki Lounge
