Wine Wednesday: BV Cabernet

Founded by Georges de Latour in 1900, Beaulieu Vineyards ("BV" as it's commonly known) has been producing benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for longer than any of us have been on the planet. --- And, some of the BV Latour wines are pretty pricey. The BV Latour Private Reserve sells for $103, for example.

However, BV also makes a Napa Valley Cabernet that is well within the reach of us all. BV Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 goes for a mere $19.99 and frequently is on special for $16.99 -- a Cabernet bargain that's hard to beat.

This delicious wine, made primarily from Rutherford and Calistoga fruit, is first fermented in stainless steel, then transferred to toasted-oak barrels for an additional 18 months of aging.

A dash of Syrah adds a little bit of welcome spice to the wine, which has abundant blackberry and currant flavors. There are also subtle suggestions of vanilla from the oak, as well as a slightly smoky note. I'd suggest trying it with grilled rosemary lamb chops or grilled Portabellas. I recently had it with herb-crusted porchetta and it was wonderful.
