Wine Wednesday: Curtis Heritage Blanc



Here is a white wine I like A LOT, especially for the $12.99 price:. It's called Curtis Heritage Blanc 2010. ---

Curtis is a Santa Barbara County winery that is devoted exclusively to producing Rhone-style wines. According to the Curtis winemakers, they make Rhone-style wines as "an alternative to the beaten path," not to mention that Rhone varietals are well-suited to the Santa Ynez Valley, where they are grown, with its foggy mornings and sun-drenched afternoons.

Head winemaker Chuck "Calypso" Carlson makes wines in a fruit-forward style, and this wine is no exception. It's simply delicious.

Curtis Heritage Blanc 2010 is a blend of 60% Viognier and 40% Roussanne. The Viognier is fermented in stainless steel, which helps to maintain the Viognier's prototypical perfumed-fruit aromas and flavors. Meanwhile, Carlson partially ferments and ages the Roussanne in neutral French oak barrels, which lends body, texture and depth to the final product. Adding to the mouthfeel, both the Viognier and Roussanne are aged on the lees, giving a enticing roundness to the wine.

The lush, tropical flavors of Heritage Blanc make it a really nice choice simply for sipping alone on the patio, but it's also a good food wine, with zesty acidity -- an excellent choice for your next picnic.
