The unique West Valley hip-hop duo New Truth released their debut EP, Truth Be Told, Wednesday morning via their bandcamp site ... aaaaand it's a heater.---

The seven-track collection is a well-balanced blend of piano-woven 808s from producer Milo Green and smooth Southern-style storytelling from rapper and Mississippi-transplant Marcus Agee, aka HQ.

The whole package comes across as rich and heavy, thanks to some clutch mastering assistance from DopeThought's producer, Jackson "Worth" Savage.

But the best thing about this project is how it seamlessly juggles realness with entertainment. Agee effortlessly skips over Green's beats almost as if he's freestyling lyrics from his gut. Tracks like "Reminisce" and "BBoyREM(ix)" touch on topics like single-parenting, drug abuse and redemption, while songs like "Compose Your [Mindset]" will more than likely inspire you to ride a lowrider bike with a Styrofoam cup in hand.

My only complaint is that if they would've just added a couple of more tracks it could have been considered a full-length album. But in its entirety, Truth Be Told  is one of the better examples of Salt Lake City's burgeoning rap scene and a clear glimpse at what's happening over on the West side. Now, go download it:

Check out New Truth at Bar Deluxe, June 28, for CrucialFest's Hip-Hop Showcase. Plus, peep what KRCL's DJ Planit of The Friday Night Fallout Show had to say about New Truth and the other rap artists at this year's CrucialFest.
