Rally and Fundraiser for Same-Sex Marriages this Weekend

LGBT supporters, gay newlyweds now in legal limbo and straight allies plan to hit the Utah State Capitol Friday to rally for marriage equality. Saturday, you can also join a special “Love Elevated” mass-wedding reception to help raise funds to fight the state's $2 million legal battle to prohibit same-sex marriage in Utah.---

On Dec. 20, Utah was shocked to learn that federal judge Robert Shelby had found Utah's prohibition on same-sex marriage to be discriminatory and unconstitutional. Now, the United States Supreme Court has put a stay on same-sex marriages in the state and Gov. Herbert and Attorney General Sean Reyes have decided the state won't recognize same-sex couples, leaving their rights to equal parenting of their children, planning of wills, health-benefits planning and others in the lurch until the 10th Circuit Court's decision.

A rally of hundreds is planned Friday at the Capitol, where supporters will deliver a petition asking Herbert to recognize the marriages and allow Shelby's ruling to stand. Saturday, equality advocates will be hosting a massive wedding reception for Utah's 1,000 plus same-sex couples in a smart and casual-attire affair that will include a Champagne toast, classy eats by LeCroissant Catering and music by DJ Dennis Rowley, Lady Murasaki and others.

The celebration is hosted by community partners, like X96, Q Salt Lake and Restore Our Humanity, the group that will receive funds from the event to help litigate against the state's battle for marriage inequality.

Check out the rally Friday, Jan. 10, at the Utah State Capitol, 350 N. State, at 12:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Jan. 11 you can swing by the Love Elevated fundraiser at the Rail Event Center, 235 N. 500 West, 6-10 p.m.
