Hey, kids! We hit our first real lull of the summer; we only have four albums to discuss this week. But thankfully three of them are tied to release shows, so you'll have something to beat the heat as we slip into August. We'll start with the one online release worth mentioning, which is from SLC band Follow The Weather
—an alternative two-piece made up of the married duo David and Danielle Phillips, mixing acoustic guitar with violin. The music itself is pretty and soothing; they're not quite an island to themselves in the music scene, but they definitely have their own peninsula. The duo released their debut self-titled album last week, completely recorded and produced by themselves. You can download a copy for $7 off their Bandcamp page
As for the release shows this weekend, tonight at The State Room features Talia Keys
. If you're not already familiar with Keys at this point, you must not be getting out too often. Aside from her own solo work, Keys has been a part of the band Marinade for the past five years until they disbanded earlier this month, but before that they had a gig almost every weekend somewhere in SLC. As a solo musician, Keys already has one badass soul album to her name called Gemini Mind
, which came out back in June 2014. Her new album, Fool's Gold
, is an impressive piece of funk, rock and soul, all put together over at Man Vs. Music studios with Mike Sassich and her backup band. You can snag a copy of it tonight as she plays with Brian Ernst and Grits Green opening the show. Tickets are just $8 and the music starts at 9 p.m.
Meanwhile, over at Kilby Court, we'll see the latest release from Better Taste Bureau
. These guys have been hot for a solid year since the trio of Hurris
, Gig and Mason Brewer doubled their efforts and pushed themselves to become one of the most recognized hip-hop acts in the state. Doesn't hurt having two good albums like Outliers
and As Good As It Was
under their belts. Now the trio are back with a brand new release called The Right Here EP
, which you'll be able to snag a copy of at Kilby Court tonight, with Mouse Powell, Apt, and Chuck Noland opening. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the show, and doors open at 7 p.m.
Finally, our last release happens down in Orem, as Maddie Wilson
puts out her new album. Wilson is an indie pop/country star who has actually seen some minor success. Her debut self-titled EP received some national attention and scored her a #1 single on the indie country charts with the song "Mistie Girl." Since then, the majority of her career has involved creating singles for iTunes consumption, but nothing has hit the chart quite like her first. Lightning Strikes
will be her first full-length album and first non-single release in over three years, featuring a mix of already released material and brand new tracks. You can get a copy tonight at her release show over at The Stereo Room, with Madilyn Paige and Jessica Frech opening. Tickets are just $7 and the doors open at 8 p.m.
