Local Releases: Eight Ways To Rock In The Fall
Local album releases from Bass Mint Pros, Valentine & The Regard, Cult Leader and more.
We have eight albums to talk about this week—some super awesome and some really obscure—along with a release show tonight. We'll start with one of the biggest to come out in the later half of 2015, the latest from Cult Leader. It's rare these days to see people freak the fuck out over albums way ahead of their release; the last time was back in late 2012 when word was out of a new SubRosa album. Cult Leader'slatest album, Lightless Walk, is just brutal as all hell. While parts of it sound more like a hardcore album than metal, you can still hear the loud as hell roots in every track. You can get it on Bandcamp right now for $8.
Next up is a new addition to the Hel Audio catalog as we have the latest from legendary SLC producer SIAK. One of the finest local minds behind electronica, beat and techno music, SIAK has honed his craft to a nearscience, and usually has something that will get even the most jaded of electro-listeners bobbing their heads. His latest is a six-track EP called PHD , 30 minutes of underground beats for your listening pleasure. You can download a digital copy for $5 or get a cassette tape for $6 on Hel Audio's Bandcamp page.
Moving on to alternative music, we have the latest from the Orem-based band My Fair Fiend, a four-piece group made up of Callie Crofts, Austin Cross, Zac Bryant and Kyle McCann. They had a cool self-titled indie album back in 2013, and since then they have been releasing singles and EPs for the past couple years. Making Monsters is the band's sophomore album, adding a little more rock to the sound but still containing awesome vocals from Crofts—well worth your time to look into if you dig alt-rock bands. The album comes out on Oct. 27; you can pre-order it now for $10 on Bandcamp.
Sticking with the alternative, more on the surf rock side, is a band called The Boys Ranch. This project is headed up by SLC musician Dennis Richard Fuller, who plays the majority of the instruments recorded (with some help from Curtis Pettygrove) and compiles everything together DIY style. The self-titled debut EP has some good tracks and some that don't quite hit the mark, but it's worth at least checking out. You can download it for $4 on Bandcamp.
Keeping withalternative , we have the debut album from Interift , an SLC four-piece comprised of William Wagstaff, Cameron Zitting, Benjamin Zitting and Tatum Gillette. The group has been together almost four years, primarily rocking all-ages gigs, as they started out while still in high school. The group got together with Terrance DH and put together their debut album, Memories Of The Future, Today at Counterpoint Studios. You can snag a copy for $7 on their Bandcamp page.
Switching to folk, we have an album from James Junius, an SLC ambient/shoegaze rock musician who has been producing music for around two years now. He's had a few singles and EPs, his most prominent release to date being his full-length album called Aged Autumn Embers that came out this past January. He's returned with a new release called the Zion Hotel EP, which seems to have lost much of the ambiance and gained more folk. You can download it for $5 via his Bandcamp page.
The last of the online releases comes to us from Valentine & The Regard. This is a Brigham City trio made up of Mike Maurer, Collin Jiron, and Julie Maurer. They've actually put out a ton of music in a short amount of time, including two full-length album and three EPs since the spring of 2014. Their latest album, Gave You My Heart, will be released on Oct. 25 through their Bandcamp page, and you can order it now for $5.
Getting to the one release show we have this week, over at Graywhale in Taylorsville you'll see the latest from BassMint Pros. If you're unfamiliar with the group, they're an Ogden-based hip-hop supergroup with members from several local bands and performing artists, all collaborating into what is essentially a giant party. Their latest album, BMP Pirate Radio Take-Over Show, is an album made to sound like the crew took over a local college station and bombarded it with whatever they felt like playing and talking about for an hour. Kinda cool and creative. You can snag one tonight at Graywhale as the collective does a live performance, starting around 6 p.m.
