Live! at the Eccles announces 2016-2017 entertainment lineup

Programming includes Kathy Griffin, Morrissey and 'Hamilton'

In the lobby of Main Street's brand-new George and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater, city and county officials and promoters announced a new program that will bring live music concerts, comedy, nationally renowned speakers and other entertainment to the venue.

While the theater might be most closely associated with the Broadway touring productions planned for the space—including the much-anticipated local premiere of Hamilton in the 2017-2018 season—Live! at the Eccles will complement that programming with additional live performances. The music acts alone announced Thursday morning include big names like The Head and the Heart (Nov. 2), Goo Goo Dolls (Nov. 4), Amos Lee (Nov. 7), Morrissey (Nov. 12), Chris Isaak (Nov. 22) and Johnny Mathis (April 29, 2017).

Comedy performances include Jay Leno (Nov. 11) and Kathy Griffin (Jan. 27, 2017), while astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson (Feb. 15, 2017), David Sedaris (May 2, 2017) and the "AC2" tour featuring Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen (June 10, 2017) will headline speaking engagements.

Additional acts announced on Thursday include the swing/jazz group Postmodern Jukebox (Nov. 13), the multi-media tribute act Elvis Lives! (Feb. 18, 2017), guitar-hero ensemble Experience Hendrix (March 6, 2017) and China's Golden Dragon Acrobats (March 11, 2017).

The theater's 2,400 seat main auditorium provides a previously unprecedented indoor venue size for bands and other acts that might have otherwise skipped Salt Lake City during any time of the year but the summer, according to Chris Mautz of First Tracks Entertainment, one of the promoters for Live! at the Eccles. "A regular stop in the non-summer months will be transformative for our city," he said. "The experience patrons will have will be so unique, dynamic and engaging, that every night, magic will be made here."
