Horror come in the form of an ancient curse and human paranoia in local multiplexes, while a true military story, a literary adaptation and the latest working-class tale from Ken Loach fill out this week's offerings.

Megan Leavey  tells the fact-based tale of a soldier and her bomb-sniffing dog, in a way that's interesting without ever becoming truly inspirational. Daphne du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel works as psychological mystery thanks to two strong central performances. One man's fight against bureaucracy finds ferocious humanity in Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake.

Eric D. Snider observes that a miscast Tom Cruise (pictured) can't salvage the messy would-be franchise launch that is The Mummy.

In this week's feature review, Eric D. Snider praises the chilling allegory of compassion vs. fear in It Comes At Night.
