This weekend, you’ll want to pedal downtown for the Utah Bike Summit, then responsibly recycle your e-waste at a special drop-off event. Later in the week, you can start submitting entries to a community civil-rights writing project.

Geared up on gears? All you need now is to pitch in to make Utah a more cyclist-friendly state. Come learn the basics at the 2011 Utah Bike Summit, where speakers will include Andy Clarke, the president of the League of American Bicyclists, from Washington, D.C. You can also hear a pitch on a statewide pedestrian and bicycle master plan. Registration is required.

Electronic Waste Recycling Event
Saturday, April 30
It’s time for all electronics hoarders to take advantage of the opportunity to responsibly recycle old cell phones, computers, and other gizmos. Come drop off your e-waste, and you can be sure the products’ toxic cadmium, lead and other substances don’t leak into groundwater drinking sources. The event is free, with e-waste recycling sponsored by local retailer Simply Mac. A drop-off location will be at the University of Utah for Salt Lake City residents, with another location in West Valley and two locations in Utah Valley.

Freedom Writers Project
May 1-Sept. 1
The Salt Lake Community College’s Community Writing Center is asking aspiring writers to pen truth to power and submit their personal writings on their civil-rights experience. Writers need only reflect on their understanding of their civil rights, their experiences or the challenges and changes they see on the horizon. Essays, poetry and testimonials all accepted.
