Geralyn White Dreyfous, executive director of the Salt Lake City Film Center, produced last year’s Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Feature Born Into Brothels. With this year’s ceremony set for Sunday, March 5, we asked her about her Oscar experience.

In the event that Born Into Brothels hadn’t won, had you practiced your “I was happy just to be nominated” smile?

In the documentary world, what I experienced is that everybody who was there really was just happy to be there'real colleagues, real camaraderie. I think we were just astonished by the ride. We were expecting to be shaking [Super Size Me director] Morgan Spurlock’s hand. What a difference a year makes'this year we would have gone against March of the Penguins.

Since you didn’t get to make an acceptance speech, who would you like to thank?

I would have thanked the women and children of the red-light district [of Calcutta] for their courage and creativity. Locally I would have thanked Jim and Susan Schwartz, Scott Anderson, my husband, my daughter. So many people in the community helped.

If you get a chance to go again, what lesson that you learned last year would you apply?

I would definitely take a child as my guest again. My 10-year-old daughter was my complete shill'every movie star in the world came up to have a picture taken with her. It was like a Disney World experience through her eyes'“Mom, there’s Mrs. Doubtfire!nn

So, who were you wearing?

[Laughs] I was wearing Nordy’s rack from Sugar House. But my daughter got her dress made by her fourth-grade classmate at Rowland Hall.

Seat-fillers at the ceremony: Good idea, or just a way to embarrass people who need to go to the bathroom?

I didn’t really tune into that. I got up and left a couple of times, and I don’t know if anybody filled my seat because documentaries are seated so far back.
