A Trick or Two...

It’s important for your dog to learn how to behave: “come” when called, “stay” away from something, “walk on leash” without pulling...

And to learn how NOT to behave: counter surfing, barking at the neighbors, jumping up on people.

These are more or less “have-to’s” for most dog owners. We don’t really care as much if our dog can “shake” or “roll over” or “take a bow” as we do about needing him to pee and poo outside and not on the carpet.

However, tricks do have value for both dog and owner. Teaching your dog to perform tricks is fun, and usually done just for enjoyment. Since it’s not a “have-to,” there is no stress involved in the training. Like walks, and play, it’s another great way to engage with your dog.

• Training helps increase the bond between you and your dog.

• We are entertained so there is usually lots of praise and laughter (which dogs love).

By building up a repertoire of tricks, your dog can become more confident.

Your dog learns to enjoy working with you and responds better to all your cues.

A great way for you to hone your training skills

Often, during obedience training, you may get frustrated or set your expectations too high. If this happens, stop and take a break before you get discouraged. You might pull out a tug and play for a minute or two; or ask for a “twirl” and give lots cheers for a job well done. Remember to try and keep all training sessions with your dog stress free.
