The Utah arts community should note the passing of one of its premier glass artists, Robert M. Baird, from a sudden heart attack on Sept. 26, 2011.
A certified historical restorationist, he is noted for totally reconstructing the 10-foot ceiling dome of Salt Lake City’s David Keith mansion (later Leucadia headquarters) after it was destroyed in a fire.
In addition to nationwide restorations, he spent over 35 years creating original stained- and painted-glass windows, lamps, decorative tiles, blown and slump-glass specialties. He was known for expert glass beveling and perfected his own equipment, honoring old-world methods. His work can be seen in many local and out-of-state churches, commercial buildings and private homes. A true and gifted artist, Robert M. Baird leaves a body of work to be enjoyed for generations.
