It’s that time of year when people everywhere turn their attention to helping others. While it is a grand idea to work in a soup kitchen or drop your spare change into one of those bell-ringer’s kettles, let me present another, possibly more entertaining, way of giving this yuletide season: Salt Lake Film Society’s “Sing with Maria.”

If you can bring yourself to admit that you already know every single word to that fantastic Sound of Music score, the rest should be easy. Not only do you get a chance to dress up if you want to, belting out the tunes with a theater full of other enthusiasts, you get a gift bag, tea and cookies at intermission and a pre-show with local talent. Best of all is the charitable part. All proceeds go the SLFS’s “Big Pictures Little People” program, which brings great films to disadvantaged youth.

Sing with Maria: The Sound of Music @ Tower Theatre, 876 E. 900 South, Saturday, Dec. 12, 2 & 6 p.m., 801-321-0310, SaltLakeFilmSociety.org
