East of Downtown/University District
One of the bummers for University of Utah students is that there isn’t a thriving bar scene either on campus or just one block off. But there are plenty of options as they start moving downhill toward downtown, from music venues to neighborhood joints.

35.4 Dick N’ Dixie’s
Chilled brews and a chill environment make Dick N’ Dixie’s one of the hood’s hottest bars. Packed to the door on weekends, this corner joint combines dive-style friendliness with a clean and chic interior, well-lit with ceiling-high windows to make it a must-stop watering hole. 479 E. 300 South, Salt Lake City, 801-521-3556

37.0 Tavernacle Social Club
If you’re a regular at Salt Lake City’s most raucous and venerable piano bar, it’s either because you’ve got a heavenly, beer-fueled singing voice or you just like having one hell of a good time. Here, you can request songs of the dueling piano players who will play and belt out everything from Garth Brooks hits to Nine Inch Nails. 201 E. 300 South, 801-519-8900, Salt Lake City, Tavernacle.com

37.4 Trolley Wing Company
Nothing goes better together than ice-cold beer and fiery hot wings. It’s a delightful pairing at the Wing Company, an unassuming beer bar in Trolley Square, where you can relax and watch the big game over a basket of its special “twice-baked, never fried” hot wings, in special sauces ranging from raspberry chipotle to Cajun lemon. 602 E. 500 South, 801-538-0745, Salt Lake City, TrolleyWingCompany.com

37.7 The Urban Lounge
As a hipster watering hole, The Urban Lounge may not be the ideal place to try and have a deep conversation, thanks to the blaring music of the near-nightly musical acts that range from underground hip-hop to psych rock and electronica. But if you’re looking for a place to enjoy cool music, cool brews and cool kids, this is the spot for you. 241 S. 500 East, Salt Lake City, 801-746-0557, TheUrbanLoungeSLC.com

37.8 Johnny’s on Second
Johnny’s on Second is a drinking spot with diversions. Enjoy pool tables, shuffleboard and Texas Hold ‘Em on Sunday nights and frosty brews every day of the week. You also won’t want to miss Johnny’s signature cocktails like the Bloody Red Hooker, which has vodka, triple sec, lime juice, sour mix and Chateau Monet, or the Bob Marley shooter, which has Jager and Midori. 165 E. 200 South, Salt Lake City, 801-746-3334, JohnnysOnSecond.com

37.9 X-Wife’s Place
Dive into this cozy downtown dive where you can enjoy drinks at working-class prices, plenty of pool tables, a spacious outdoor patio and a rousing cornhole tournament on Sundays. Yes, that’s right, cornhole—you know, the bean-bag-toss game, an activity that pairs well with this joint’s frosty beers. 465 S. 700 East, Salt Lake City, 801-532-1954

41.5 Bar-X
The X marks the spot for one of SLC’s most beautiful bar interiors, one that conveys the sense of a high-class 1920s speakeasy. Inside, chill brews match the relaxed atmosphere, and the specialty cocktails are methodically crafted with love and effort. This bar also has relaxing musical offerings like acoustic Sundays and a Motown DJ on Monday nights. 155 E. 200 South, Salt Lake City, 801-355-2287

44.1 Twilite Lounge
The Twilite Lounge is a veteran of City Weekly’s Best of Utah for its inviting dive atmosphere that appeals to working-class stiffs and tight-pantsed hipsters alike. Enjoy delicious brews, a free jukebox and the warmth of one of downtown’s friendliest watering holes. 347 E. 200 South, Salt Lake City, 801-532-9400, TwiliteLounge.com

52.1 Big Ed’s
This tiny comfort-food and drinking spot on U campus is legendary for the character and hospitality of the establishment’s matriarch, Linda Lin. She lovingly purveys tasty beers and delicious, affordable, greasy-spoon fare, like the $3.75 cheeseburger and fries special or sumptuous fried potstickers, to a crowd of regulars who just can’t get enough. 210 S. University St., Salt Lake City, 801-582-9045
