The Utah Asian Festival has aged well over its 33 years. The number three is significant in Chinese culture, representing sanctity of life and progeny—fitting for a festival where first-generation elders teach their culture’s living traditions to second, third, even fourth generations. Now, it’s grown to encompass the traditions of more than 15 Asian and Pacific Islander communities. Wrapped up in that mix are arts, crafts, music, dance and cooking skills, all of which will be showcased to the general public.
As patiently trained hands brush out calligraphy strokes, festival goers don’t just watch, they join in and learn. That’s how the festival is most effective: More than just performing aspects of the culture, it invites people to learn by doing. The art gallery shows off the Asian for intricate designs along with the beauty of simplicity. And, no trip to the Asian Festival is complete without sampling the kim chee.
